Take Back the Night

This past Thursday, Notre Dame hosted its first Take Back the Night, an event dedicated to supporting victims of sexual assault (and we added domestic violence) and promoting education of this heinous crimes (particularly the Victim's Bill of Rights). Together, we came as a campus community to hear advocates from Turn Around (the hotline and organization in Baltimore for anyone who is sexually assaulted), survivors' stories, poems, open mic session, and a luminaria ceremony. Using glowsticks and breaking them at different times (timed to when the emcee says who you were there to support) in a dark room, you saw that there was so much love and support in various forms and how sexual assualt has touched us in different ways. Survivors held candles at the front of the crowd to lead the walk and everyone with their glowsticks followed behind and dropped them in the lumiaria bags along the path to "light the night" along the campus and really "take back the night."

On April 19 a group of my friends and I went to Johns Hopkins' campus to participate in Relay for Life. Relay is this cool event where all these groups who have been fundraising all year join together in the culminating event which is Relay for Life. At the event, we honor survivors, those battling cancer, and those who have lost their lives to cancer through doing a relay walk around a set lap (someone in your team has to be walking at all times all 12 hours so you relay the lap and it symbolizes that the fight continues until we find a cure!), on site fundraisers like Miss Relay, performances from the dance teams etc. Okay my description does not do it justice but in case you want to know more, the American Cancer Society sure does a better job at it. Jimmy Buffet on campus?

Haha no, not really. Remember the student surprise/luau for Dr. Conneely last week? Well the student surprise was actually a guitar signed by Jimmy Buffet for PC's new office! In Notre Dame colors! Thank you to the student orgs (yaaaay SGA and student life!) What do you guys thinks? (Thanks Tess for the picture)

Rain rain go away

Okay I know it's April and showers are good for May flowers but it's reeeaaaaaallly cold!! It went from dresses and shorts weather to uggs in 24 hours. Whew! I mean don't get me wrong I'm not praying for that 96 or 97 degree weather on Wednesday but Tuesday and Thursday weren't too bad on the balcony. Anyway, today feels more like a Pandora, reading, movie/nap day. Too bad I have all sorts of meetings today. On the bright side, I might be going to the mall later! (If the rain stops... :( I'm in the admissions suite right now sitting at the front desk and luckily I'm turned away from the window so I don't have the urge to catnap at work....I mean, what I would never... Hahaha. What're you guys up to on this bleak day?

A historic day for Notre Dame

Today's the day! Notre Dame will officially inaugurate our 12th president--second lay person to serve...oh and he's the first male in this position! Okay, we're a women's college but we have other "colleges" under the umbrella university. Today we embrace that growth and ongoing transformation at 11:30 as Dr. Conneely will officially be installed as Notre Dame's 12th president. Keep an eye out for pictures--today is also the inauguration ball ;) Oh btw, isn't our tower beautiful. Blue for Notre Dame!

Surprise!

We just got back from Spring Break on Tuesday and we had to hit the ground running as this week is Inauguration Week for Dr. Conneely! We started the main festivities last night with a student surprise for the president. Anyone who knows Dr. C knows his love for Jimmy Buffet and so the entire community got together to give him a blue and white JImmy Buffet autographed guitar! That's not all--the committee hired a Jimmy Buffet cover band to play at our luau. I have never seen the gym look so pretty! It was a completly different scene.
